I have no patience for historical books that feel embalmed. Jefferson’s Wolf sounds like it still has some motion in it.

The title alone has a little bite, which helps. I want history that remembers landscape, risk, weather, and the unnerving fact that the past was once present tense for everyone inside it.

If this one keeps that alive, it is exactly the kind of road-adjacent history book I end up pressing on other people.
